Hi I need some advice for new chair type

Postby geordie graham » 20 Jan 2026, 17:00

Hi everyone, my TDX SP is on its last legs and I need a new chair but would like some advice. I bought it over 10 years ago secondhand and my condition has worsened. I have Charcot Marie Tooth disease which is under the Muscular Dystrophy umbrella and also Degenerative Disc Disease and a demyelinating neuropathy , back and leg muscles constantly in spasm causing every day pain. Well thats the sob story out of the way, I know most of the users on here use a rear wheel drive chair and was wondering if that would be beneficial to rather then MWD , however I do still like to get out and about in the countryside doing bird watching and photography etc and was wondering whether the rear wheel drive would be as stable over slightly rough ground. I don’t use a chair inside my home only when outside. Would love a Magic Mobility V6 but can’t afford one so will be looking at one of the Sunrise Mobility range.
Thanks Graham

Seriously I would recommend your magic mobility choice. Yes expensive. But disability just is.

Thats maybe true in Europe, in china, and HK etc but in the continental USA they are extremely scarce to unavailable. Vey few to even choose from and thats half the people here.

Which is best for stability off road depends on a bunch of things. Mostly size. That V6 is wide and very long. So stable on up and downhil slopes. Most mid drives including yours are terrible outdoors compared to rear drive. But rear drive needs different skills and definitely the right configuration or they are terrible... Where does that leave you? I dont know. My 5 chairs, all rear drive...

I get the photography thing, me too. Birds? No. Well not that type.

His profile says he lives in Spain.

I live in a rural area and my rear-wheel drive wheelchair is very stable on uneven terrain...

10 years experience is trustworthy.

MWD is more stable and less rocking back and forth. These are important for outdoor use.

Major weakness is loss of grip on loose / slippery terrain.
