Ears

Postby Burgerman » 07 Jan 2025, 22:10

I am a bit deaf.
As a teen, I loved very loud music, then did the sound for a local very loud (small) amateur rock band for years. Then super loud high performance superbikes and open exhausts, drag racing etc. It didnt help!

I sometimes struggle to hear my laptop. Its the high frequencies you see, they no longer get heard!
I came across all sorts of hearing aids etc and they all seem to make a sound louder but just as unintelligable.

Then I saw this on a nature program.

It has (unsurprisingly) remarkably good hearing!

So I made myself some bigger ears from card and tape.... As you do. Now I looked a twat. But the improvement in hearing was remarkable. MASSIVE improvement! Now I did this as a tempory measure as a bit of fun.

But seriously it works supremely well!

So do people with large sticky out ears have the same hearing advantage?
This baby is absolutely real. Its mother was considering an operation to reduce the effect!

So I looked a bit further on the web...
And found this.
Now these were made or 3d printed as a bit of fun.

But... I expect that the side effect is that he can hear a bumble be half a mile away.
So since this stuff actually works, and the humans have much smaller ears than say dogs or most animals, and that we communicate via speech, then why didnt we evolve huge ears too? Obviously it gives a huge evolutionary advantage if you can hear so much better! Over greater distances. And less likely to be eaten too.

If you cant spot an obvious photoshopped image you may need new eyeballs as well as new earballs.

Modern hearing aids are much improved - even what is offered on the NHS. Have a hearing test done and see what they offer you.

I have, its my left ear only. Tried aids, prescribed. But they dont make things much better just different. But cupping my hand behind that ear makes at least as much diference. A vast improvement.

Aids are too much trouble and since I have one good ear I dont bother.

The real query was that since it helps even on good ears, (you see kids doing it at times with a hand(s) too) then why didnt we evolve bigger ears? We use them for communication more-so than any other animal.

When my old long gone german shephard hears a sound at the door, his radars shot up, he tilts his head to help use phase detection etc better for directionality and he could her stuff we cant.
