Fender idea for 13x5 tires Bounder

Postby emilevirus » 06 Feb 2026, 02:27

I'd like to add fenders to my Bounder. Cheap. Bounder wants $500 for their fenders. Surely something cheaper exists. Been looking at trailer fenders but I struggle finding the right size. They're all too big.

Quad bikes, mini bikes, kids ride on toys, mowers, etc all use them. All sizes. Or make some. Its just a bit of plastic. Or metal. Cut a segment from a couple of cheap buckets. Or bread bins, or food bowls. Take a look around toy, houshold goods, white goods, DIY stores, and thing laterally. But a small cordless 3 inch disc cutter.

I have a Bosch one. Well 2...

A 3 inch 76mm one. And a dremmel style one. Either one will do it.

And on my 3 inch cutter I added a few different disk types...

Why a 12V mini one? Well less scary, quiet, easy and small. Will still cut anything.
Tiles, bricks, steel, alloy, plastics, you if you get it wrong.

Oh yes... Just remembered! Tyres, choose the size, cut the section you want, make simple metal mounting bracket. Those are flexible unbreakable and old ones everywhere.

I ordered ABS sheets. That should do it.

Bounder wants $500 for their fenders

They bend you over, then stick a big stick up your bum. And wiggle it about.
Like the motors, thats around 10x the price that I estimate they should cost. Same with everything on their parts list. They are taking the piss.

So... Added!
I just looked up the mudguard (fender in english) on a Q100, Q200, ETC on sunrise medical site. This is full retail price.
7. PN 22614056 Mudguard right £ 26.75
8. PN 22614057 Mudguard left £ 26.75

-under £54 uk pounds a set... Inclues bolts and spacers. Just to get a feel for the real prices. And I dont even think thats particularly cheap.

Its the part that comes forward with a reflector and screw in it, and over the tyre. All one bit.

One question, emilevirus.
Do you really need mudguards?

A couple weeks ago I tried designing and 3D printing some fenders for my wife's Bounder out of TPU. Not totally happy with how they turned out, but better than nothing. Needs some minor tweaks, but the biggest issue I'm having is that they need to be a little longer, but I can't print any larger on my printer.

You could print them in two parts. I just used an abs sheet. Looks OK.

Expensive? I used to host a forum with over 10M posts and 100GB of attachments. Only cost me $5 a month.

Out of curiosity, what thickness ABS did you use? And did you just use a heat gun to soften it to bend?

And you bring up a good point about printing in two parts. I've been trying to figure out how I want to do it. I don't want mechanical type fasteners. Glues generally don't work on TPU, because the they don't hold well and dry rigid, which sort of defeats the reason of using a flexible filament. I could probably put like a plastic welding tip in my soldering gun, but that sounds sort of tedious. I think what I am settling on is to do solvent welding. TPU holds up to most solvents but it sounds like THF works the best from what I've read. But I can't find a good (pure), reasonably priced source locally. A lot of PVC cements are 30-50% THF, but I think I have found a PVC cement for shower pan liners that is ~70% THF at a local hardware store. So I may be doing some experiments with that this weekend.

Yes only a heatgun. I just ordered whatever came up first on Amazon which was 1/16" thick.
You could just use a stapler instead of glue.
