I get emails like these every single day.
Batteries are the single most problematic thing when it comes to powerchairs or
scooters!
Its like this. Batteries do not suddenly fail (most of the time) They begin to
deteriorate from the day they are manufactured. They then get gradually worse
with use, and over time. They do not do this suddenly. They APPEAR to be "bad"
when YOU notice something is wrong.
Batteries slowly deteriorate from internal
corrosion, active materials getting used up, And from Sulphation, electrolyte
loss and other things. No matter how well you look after them
When is the correct time to replace
your powerchairs battery?
When YOU notice they no longer support your daily usage pattern.
Almost all quality mobility batteries have the same "lifespan" and number of
cycles if used in the same way. Although with batteries you do tend to get what
you pay for.
Cheap batteries are usually
pretty crap!
By quality I mean MK, Odyssey, Optima, Sonnenschein, and one or two other
true deep cycle batteries. All the rest are a waste of your money unless you
barely use your powerchair or scooter.
The reason some people get 6 or 7 years from a set of batteries and others
(myself included) replace them yearly is because of the usage patterns.
Because I really do work my batteries hard and deplete them deeply every day I
both wear them out faster, and also NOTICE that the range has decreased, even
when the battery has only really lost a little range. Most people don't go far
enough to notice.
The batteries I throw away, would probably be "good" for another five years if I
gave them to someone that never really goes very far. Because they would never
get to the point where I found them lacking since they do not travel far enough.
This is the main reason some batteries seem to last for huge lengths of time.

When do you swap them for
new ones? When they no longer do what you want them to do! There is no fixed
point. They all just deteriorate gradually, from the first week you have them,
over time, until it bothers you! Or you notice. This point is wildly different
depending on user.
Some things kill your batteries faster though. These
are as follows.
a) Discharging them deeply. If you travel a long way every day
you use up the active plate material faster. Batteries can provide many
thousands of shallow discharges. But only a few tens of really deep discharges.
So charge your batteries as often as possible! Even give them a part
charge during the day if possible.
b) Leaving a battery for a length of time without it being
fully charged. This causes sulphation. That's bad! Batteries "self discharge"
over time. So if you don't use your powerchair or scooter for a few weeks make
sure you charge it anyway overnight! Once every 1 to 2 weeks. If you don't do
this you may ruin them.
